The Central Oregon Interpreter Conference (COIC) brings together interpreters committed to advancing their practice and leading the evolution of the profession. Guided by this year’s theme, The Thinking Interpreter: Leading the Evolution of Practice and Tools, the conference focuses on strengthening both professional judgment and practical skills required in today’s complex interpreting environments.
Participants will explore values-based ethical reasoning to deepen decision-making skills in challenging real-world encounters. Interpreters will be introduced to the Demand Control–Schema (DC-S) as a way to engage in reflective peer learning to analyze real scenarios and refine professional judgment. A session on Artificial Intelligence introduces the PREPARE Framework, demonstrating how interpreters can responsibly use emerging tools to strengthen preparation, expand subject-matter knowledge, and enhance performance. The conference will also include a session on simultaneous interpreting, expanding participants’ understanding of techniques and settings where this mode of interpretation is used.
Together, these sessions reinforce the idea that interpreters are not passive participants in change, but active professionals shaping the future of language access through thoughtful practice, continuous learning, and responsible use of new tools.
This session examines the core skills that support successful simultaneous interpreting, including meaning extraction, anticipation strategies, terminology management, and handling dense information such as numbers and names. Participants will also explore the dynamics of booth teamwork, learning how active and supporting interpreters collaborate to maintain accuracy, coherence, and a unified interpreted message.
