Welcome to our Advanced Scientific Computing Course!! Watch the short video below to introduce you to the course! :)
Feel free to refer to our introductory course to review topics at any point! This link can also be found on the home page :)
To Get Started :
Eagerness to Learn New Skills
Computer with Internet Access (to make coding easier, it's best to use a laptop, not a phone or ipad)
Free Google Account to login with Google Classroom
Often students find using a 2nd monitor can be helpful, but definitely not required.
Other Tools We Will Use: (No need to have these before class, we will walk you through these tools step-by-step)
Trinket Account for testing out code while watching videos (Recommended, not required.)
Free GitHub Account to store/run files & begin setting up your Scientific Computing Portfolio.
The Course is designed for delivery as interactive modules of 2-4 hours duration each
Each module site includes several slides or short videos to learn content .
You will also practice coding questions using Trinket windows embedded within each module.
To assess your comprehension of the module material, you will complete short auto-graded quizzes.
At the completion of each module, you will use Google Colab as your workspace to practice writing code and you will turn in your link to Colab workbook via a form at the last section of each module. The first 6 min of this video provide a good introduction to Colab.
Once you've completed your project (at the end of this course), you can email SciComp@engineeringtomorrow.org to schedule a presentation session with our engineers to receive your final grade! (more on this later)
We understand this is an asynchronous class and want to offer as many options to help you as possible:
Email SciComp@engineeringtomorrow.org for any specific questions you have and one of our mentors will respond
Rewatch videos / redo examples (including resources from Sci Comp I if necessary!)
Use ChatGPT or another LLM to guide you through errors and help make sense of where to go next with your code. Do not ask for the answers. This will not help your learning and will show in your coding.
Watch the short video below to learn some guiding principles for using AI.
In the below sections, we will go over Google Colab and Trinket, which you will be coding in throughout this course.
We will use Google Colab for these modules because they're free to use, easy to share, have a simple interface, and great for lots of advanced applications of Python! Watch the video below to learn about Google Colab and how to use it!
We use trinkets throughout this course to embed spaces where you can code right on the site while following along! Watch the video below to learn more about trinkets! You can also follow along on the trinket below!
Practice using trinkets here!
