The compacted graft consists of a cartilaginous top layer and a subchondral bone bottom layer.
Future experiments will aim to improve the efficacy of compaction, by increasing the final collagen density of the cartilaginous construct. The dimensions of the graft were similar to the target dimensions determined for a medial femoral condyle defect in a goat model.
After double diffusion, calcification was observed at the interface between a bovine cartilage slice and a subchondral bone plug. Calcification did not cover the full area of the cartilage-bone interface.
Graft capsules sealed within nylon bagging were protected from exposure to contaminants (i.e. saliva and dust).
