Database contains all personal information from users when they login and use the application. Therefore, when we do not manage the database carefully, it may be hacked and the information will be leaked, which violates the privacy of users.
At this stage of our project, we just store the eating time and calorie intake of users in order to keep track and analyze the process of eating habit. While this initial stage does not contain many personal data without considerate ethical issues, the future stage of the project when expanding the implementation of machine learning will require ethical considerations because it might contain more personal information.
At the current stage of the project, we are working mostly with the Xcode program and dry lab to build the application. Therefore, there is no negative impact on the environment significantly. We did not use any chemical or mechanical products in this project; hence, the environment will not be affected.
For the safety and health consideration, the only safety and health part for our project is ergonomic pose when working with the computer. During the long hours of working with computer, it might lead to some spine problems if we do not have any ergonomic chairs.
In addition, working with the computer for a long time will influence the health of eyes, so it can be considered as one of another health issue of this project.
For the users, there are some problems that need to be considered as well. Using the application when eating may lead to some psychological issue when people get annoyed or affected by the notification.
The bite timer has the ability to serve a massive global impact.
While 2/3 of the United States is considered either overweight or obese, in the entire world, 38 percent of men and 36.9 percent of women are considered overweight or obese. Although this number is not as large as the United States, it is still a number that could be brought down. The bite timer has the potential to dramatically change the number of overweight or obese people not only in the United States, but in the world. The bite timer also has the potential to save food waste. In the United States alone, 133 billion pounds and $161 billion dollars of food was wasted in 2010. This number has grown even larger in the nine years since then. This number would be even greater when looking at the world as a whole. Since the bite timer would allow people to eat less food during their meal, it could eventually move to solve the problem of food waste in America and the world. The global impact that the bite timer has rests in its ability to help people solve their health issues and potentially save food from turning into waste.
