Fusions are special events where two genes are abnormally fused together. They are generally thought to be caused by genetic rearrangement. Fusions have been used as companion diagnostic tests and therapeutic targets for cancer. One important example is EML4-ALK fusion:ALK is an important fusion partner; ALK kinase inhibitor is one of the first medications for NSCLC.
fuseFISH technology utilizes oligo probes conjugated with quantum-dot chemical fluorescence to detect the existence of fusion transcripts. It has been validated in cell lines and biopsy samples against current standards of qPCR, RNA-seq and DNA FISH.
fuseFISH is able to detect known fusion transcripts like EML4-ALK at a sensitivity higher than current standard like qPCR and RNA-sequencing. What's more fuseFISH also complements curret gold standard method of DNA break-apart FISH in the detection of fusion transcripts.
