During the early 1970’s DDT, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, or a powerful insecticide, was banned in California, this prompted many to dump chemicals off the coast of California. A massive DDT dump was found right off the coast of California. Since all these chemicals were dumped illegally, there are estimated half a million barrels dumped off the coast. The effects of all these chemicals are unknown and have a potential of moving up the food chain and creating devastating effects on the ecosystem. The Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific has stepped into for environmental monitoring.
NIWC Pacific has developed individual deep sea units to take data and resurface up to 2000m of depth.
