Week 1 Progress Report
(12/2013 – 1/8/2014)
Team 1: Fluorescent Label Simulator
Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
· Change in project deliverables
· Components for prototype are still being reviewed (especially the LEDs and photosensors)
· Component distributers and manufacturers are being contacted
· Goal set to have prototype of LED simulator built with basic functional parameters by 1/18
· Most basic filter and photosensor designs completed and components ordered by 1/15
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Individual Component Analyses Finished
Cassette specifications acquired. ESE Quant representative relationship established.
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Complete budget estimate for entire project (John)
LED Simulator prototype schematic and circuitry built. Parts ordered. (John, Mike)
LED Simulator prototype housing and dark room built (Marina, James)
Website updated by Friday midnight (James)
Data Capture System chosen. NI DAQ system trialed (Kyle)
Update project requirements and develop plan for first four weeks (Kyle)
Single wavelength filter chosen (Mike)
Calibration and monocromatic photosensors chosen (Marina)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
Exact changes in project deliverables will be given to team at next sponsor meeting
Comment: Project deliverables removed: UV emitter omitted from testbed, only emission wavelength of our choice (from the two listed emission wavelengths) is necessary, there is no longer a size requirement for the LED simulator Action: updated diagram and test plan and requirements document
Comment: Project deliverable tests added: sensor distance vs. signal intensity, exposure/dwell time Action: updated test plan and requirements document
Comment: Project design deliverables added: interchangeability of light source and photosensor components, adjustable height between photosensor and led simulator Action: updated test plan and requirements document
Comment: Suggestion to look into electrical signal conditioning through filters (bandpass, high pass, low pass) Action: Spoke with Steve Roberts
Comment: Inquire with Qiagen on the light sensitivity and type of photosensor used in the ESE Quant LR3 Action: Email to be sent to Qiagen contact Roberto
Comment:The light sensitivity and dark current (like SNR) of photosensors should be investigated before purchasing a photosensor. Action: Specifications to be gathered
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
Clarify project requirements with sponsor as soon as possible
Risks and Areas of Concern
Building the LED simulator so that the emitted light has a narrow intensity peak surrounding the target light wavelength
A spectrometer may be necessary in the future to characterize LED simulator
Position of illuminator may give sensor a false reading if not well positioned/filtered
Effect of lateral positional of photosensor with respect to LED simulator is unknown
Resources or Information Required but not Available
Light sensitivity and photosensor type of the ESE Quant
Specific project deliverables regarding the newly added tests and requirements. This information will be delivered next week by our sponsor.
Schedule
Design Proposal Presentation due Tuesday
Complete webpage
Assign report sections
Update Gantt chart.
Budget (list amount spent and amount remaining)
$6500 remaining
High price items such as calibration photosensor, data acquisition unit, precision height adjustment stand, and possibly a new laptop need to be budgeted.
