NCA or nonlinear contingency analysis
Nonlinear contingency analysis is an approach to understanding behavior that acknowledges the complexity and dynamic interactions between environmental events.
Linear: When one is looking only at the variables related to the referent behavior. A-B-C analysis
Nonlinear: When alternative behaviors and contingencies are considered.
What are some alternatives to access the critical reinforcer?
What would happen if one did not engage in referent behavior (RB)?
What are the benefits AND costs of the RB and Available Alternative Behavior (AAB)?
Our lab is working on investigating the application of a nonlinear analysis in functional behavior assessment by evaluating the costs and benefits of not only the disturbing patter of behavior but also the available alternative behaviors. This allows the therapist to understand the maintaining consequences, or what make the disturbing patters rational.
