Early Learning Sensory Support (previously Governor Morehead Preschool) returns to Governor Morehead School
Exciting News! S.B. 257 moved the Early Learning Sensory Support Program for Children with Visual Impairments back to Governor Morehead School effective December 1, 2026. The legislation also clarified that GMS should serve children from birth to age 22. Prior to 2010, ELSSP-VI was part of Governor Morehead School but was separated from the school when both programs were moved under the NC Department of Public Instruction. Later in 2014, the Governor Morehead Preschool was renamed ELSSP-VI by NC DPI.
Effective December 1, 2026, GMS intends to return to the name Governor Morehead Preschool as the program had been called from 1988 to 2014 for our services to children from birth to age 5. Effective for the 2027-2028 school year, GMS plans to resume serving preschool children from age 3 to 5 through stateside itinerate services as had been done prior to 2024 when NC DPI ended that service.
We will share more information about how to access these services in Spring 2027.
GMS is excited to offer a comprehensive set of TVI and O&M services from birth to age 5 through the Governor Morehead Preschool!
