The Governor Morehead School empowers North Carolina students with visual impairments and additional disabilities through Accessible Academics, Independence by Design, Future Life Readiness, and Holistic Student Growth and Wellness, equipping them to thrive as independent, lifelong learners.
Our Summer Learning Programs extend this mission, promoting Growth, Meaning, and Success through engaging, skill-based experiences.

A special thank you to Crabtree Valley Mall for welcoming our students, families, and staff as students practiced Essential Core Curriculum (ECC) skills, including riding an escalator for the first time, using tactile maps, and exploring the mall with confidence. Thank you as well to Mrs. Fields and Auntie Anne's Pretzels for the delicious treats that made the experience even more memorable!

Through meaningful experiences, accessibility, and real-world learning opportunities, students built confidence, independence, and connections that extend beyond the classroom.

Join us for an unforgettable weekend of learning, connection, and adventure! Special guest Dr. Lauren Lieberman will lead students and families through engaging experiences centered on Accessible Sports, Advocacy, and Adventure at the Governor Morehead School campus.
Throughout the weekend, participants will take part in interactive sessions featuring Goalball, Track & Field, Blind Soccer, Fitness at Home, and opportunities to learn from and engage with Paralympians. Whether you're interested in developing new athletic skills, strengthening self-advocacy, exploring adaptive recreation, or connecting with other families, this event has something for everyone!
This opportunity is open to students 9-19 years of age, and one parent or guardian must attend with each student. Once you arrive on campus, all weekend amenities will be provided, including lodging, meals, and transportation for any scheduled off-campus activities. Linens will be provided, although you are welcome to bring your own if preferred. Guests are asked to bring their own towels and any personal items needed for the weekend.
Space is limited to just 15 families, so be sure to register early to reserve your spot.

Summer Learning Programs

A special thank you to Ms. Courtney for sharing her expertise with our staff and students by demonstrating the importance of healthy ingredients and teaching students how to make sourdough bread. Through this hands-on experience, students strengthened their Essential Core Curriculum (ECC) skills while building independence, confidence, and real-world skills in the kitchen.

AMC Theatre truly brought the big screen to life for our students by providing audio description services that allowed both students and staff to fully experience the movie. We are grateful for this incredible partnership, commitment to accessibility, and the special treat of free popcorn that made the experience even more memorable!
Students focused on their fitness and wellness skills with Ms. Kristina, who transformed the gym into an engaging and energetic space through music, breathwork, and creative activities with pool noodles! We appreciate her valuable insight and guidance in helping our students develop healthy habits and understand the importance of wellness in the real world.

"On July 23, we had the pleasure of touring the campus at Governor Morehead School for the Blind as part of the 2026 NAVP Conference.
New superintendent Kathy Segers shared exciting renovation and expansion plans in the works, aimed at providing even better facilities and opportunities for students. We also loved browsing their library and seeing braille versions of so many great book titles!
Fun fact: Governor Morehead School is also where renowned artist Ronnie Milsap attended school."
