Project Updates

10/30/21: Survey Creation Update

Challenges:

Some of the biggest challenges I have had so far is my survey. Knowing what platform to give out my survey and who to survey. I was not sure what platform to use because asking questions in person allows me to expand on a question or guide the question in order to get the type of response I am looking for. However, having an anonymous survey gives me more honest questions because people are more likely to be honest when they do not have to impress anyone, like how people act differently behind closed doors. This has been the challenge that I have been working on throughout the month. I was able to resolve this challenge a couple of days ago. Right now, I am working through what kind of questions to ask and how to structure them to get the type of answer I am looking for.

Successes:

I resolved a few of my survey challenges. I am going to survey my school’s community both the students and faculty. I am doing this because I believe I will have a larger participation rate. I believe I am going to conduct my survey through an anonymous google form. However, before I am certain of this I am going to do a mock survey both through google form and an interview in-person to see how people respond differently and to see if my questions are guiding people how I would like them to.

What I am working on next:

I am going to revise my survey questions, and then do a mock survey (both virtually and in-person to learn which one is best).

11/22/21 Update:

In-person Survey vs. Anonymous Google Form Survey:

I completed a mock survey where I gave some people the anonymous google form to fill out and for others I had an in-person interview with the same questions. I learned how both of them compared [refer to the image on the left], and was then conflicted on what was the best way to go. Through an in-person interview, was able to gather more in-depth answers; however, since I am interviewing my community I worry that many people will not want to give me completely honest answers because these questions have a societal “correct” answer, so I worry that people will give me that answer instead of their truthful answer. Then, through an anonymous survey, I gathered more truthful answers however, the interviewees either interpreted my questions in a way that did not give me the type of answer I need or their answers were so short I could not gather enough data from them. Noticing how both had strong pros and strong cons I asked for other people’s opinions on what they think is best. One person had an amazing idea of doing hybrid. So, my survey will be given out in a hybrid format to my community. I will first have in-person surveys with everyone, and after I do the in-person survey’s I will give them a google form to fill out anytime in a certain amount of time-slotted (for example two weeks). This then allows me to have the initial survey in-person to gather information and ask follow-up questions, but then also allows people to, later on, add more information that they did not want to share with me in person. The questions on both formats will be the same and I will have them fill out the entire google survey after the in-person survey so I can still collect data and make connections.

12/30/21 Update:

First Round of Interviews:

I currently have 17 interviews scheduled. For the most part, they will take place the second week of January (January 10-January 16). There is a range of people who have volunteered to be a part of the interviews. There are a few teachers, administrators, students, and some who work in the financing department.

One of my predictions before asking for volunteers was that many people who volunteered to be a part of my project would be people I have a relationship with. As I predicted, the majority of people who volunteered are people I already know and have a preexisting relationship with. However, there are a few people who I have not met before. So, while my predictions came true there were still a few people I did not know that volunteered. This is a positive outcome because I will then gain a wider perspective and answers.

Coming next:

I will be sending out another email once school starts up again on January 4 to see if anyone else is interested in participating. Then, I will start the first round of interviews, and work on gathering all of the data in one place.

1/21/22 Update:

Gathering Data

After finishing all but three of my interviews I had to start thinking about how I am going to put all of my data in one place, so I can start to make connections. After realizing how much data I would have to gather I figured that the most simple and clear format would be google sheets because I know how to use the application and would be easy to see all the answers right next to each other.

1/31/22 Monthly Update:

Successes:

I have completed all but one interview. This means that I will be able to start on my next step soon. Even though I am close to being done with my interviews I believe that I have edited and created a strong interview that will help me gather all of the data that I am looking for.

Challenges:

I challenge I am having right now is knowing how much information to put in the google sheets. I am worried that it will be a lot of time and too much information to transcribe everything somebody said for a question. However, I am also worried about not putting enough of their words, and then what they said would be out of context or misinterpreted. So right now I am working on deciding how much I should put for each person's answer and if I should transcribe or write a summary.

2/11/22 Update:

Timeline Update:

The goal is to be 50% done with my project by the end of February. Being 50% done for my project means that I have completed the interview process and have put all of my data in one place. Completing these will leave me with answering my essential question, and any conclusions I make about the data I have gathered. I am just about 50% done with my project. I need to put all of my data into the google sheets template, and then I will be able to start on the other half of my project. I am planning on meeting with faculty and my manager to gain advice on how to organize a paper with my findings and to ask them questions about trends I see in my data that I would like someone else’s opinion on. I feel good about where I am at, but I am slightly worried about there not being enough trends within my data. However, if that happens I will either discuss with an expert in my community to see if they notice any trends that I could not find, or I would set up more interviews to gather more data. My current plan is to gather all my data, evaluate it, seek guidance, and then write a paper answering my essential question.

2/24/22 Update:

Interview:

For the February interview portfolio post my manager and I agreed that since my project is based around interviews that reflecting on the interview process as my interview portfolio post would be most beneficial.  I have completed the interview section of my project, and I was able to learn and develop my interview as I went on. I would every couple of interviews I learned a new way to ask a question or another way to think about the question. For example, I had a question that if you were the teacher of a high school class and a student told you that their exam said they got a B, but you graded the work wrong and they should have gotten an A. What would you do? After asking this question someone answered both with when they were younger compared to now and before a big life-changing event to after that event. I realized that asking for different times in their life for this one question allowed me to get to know so much more and have more conclusive data. My interviews have been successful. Most people were open and willing to answer my questions to their full truths, for the most part, and I grew my skill of asking questions and learned many different ways to ask questions. During my interviews, I had to learn how to create a space where the other person felt comfortable opening up to me about things that they might be hesitant to share. I was able to learn information to answer my essential question, and just doing the interviews I could already see some potential connections. I did have an issue with flow from one question to another. There were some parts in my interview that jumped to a new area but then a couple of questions later jumped back. However, after doing a couple of interviews I realized this and reorganized my questions to flow better. The interviews have been challenging and sometimes really awkward, but they have given me the space to learn and develop my interviewing and communication skills.

3/1/22 Update:

What does success look like for your project?

Success for my project would be to have meaningful interviews with people, which means to have people feel comfortable to answer the questions to their fullest. Then, finding connections between the different interviews will allow me to create my final product. The overall success of my project would be to have enough connections from different people that I am able to create conclusions from them, and then write down those conclusions so others are able to read what I have learned.

What experiences are you hoping to have?

I am hoping to experience interviews and learn from each one of them. I want to have the experience of writing a paper even if my paper is a shorter one than the length of normal papers. I also experience presenting my ideas to other people and having the space to learn what they think.

What outcomes are you expecting to complete?

There are two main outcomes that I expect to have. One would be a written document discussion and evaluating the conclusions I have gathered and an answer to my essential question. The other outcome is to present my findings to my community and the people that I interviewed to hear their comments and feedback.

3/8/22 Update:

Update on the last meeting with my manager:

We discussed the template for gathering data about the interviews. Then, we talked about setting up a meeting with a teacher to look over the information and get her opinion on it. We also talked a little bit about what is coming up, particularly about how to sort data and find similarities. We decided to do that after I have finished putting in the data. The information to note is to finish putting in all of the data in the google sheets. Today we have our next manager meeting, and putting in the data is taking longer than I thought it would, so I do not have all the data imputed because I have not dedicated enough time to it these past couple of days. The last manager meeting went well. The majority of the meeting was talking about the next steps.

4/19/22 Update:

Final Product:

After working with two adults we came up with a way to have a final product. I decided to write a paper with all of the connections I found and questions that developed throughout the project. This way I can talk about what I learned from these interviews and this project, while also showing everything else I became curious about because of my project.

4/29/22 Update:

Summary of my Project:

My project was based on the question: How do people’s backgrounds relate to their core values in life, and how do those values affect people’s response to situations about prioritizing certain values? I did a series of interviews with adults and students in my community through a hybrid format. I first had an in-person interview and then I sent everyone an anonymous google form with the same questions to fill out only if they had anything they wanted to add but did not feel comfortable sharing in the in-person interview. The interview was broken down into three sections: background, current values, and real life situations. After the interviews and collecting all the data I realized how much more there is to learn about my project and how many different ways I can look at the information. However, I was still able to identify connections between interviews. I found contradictions between values people believe they have and their answers to real-life situations, I found connections between the religion that someone grew up with and their current beliefs, and I found connections between how people defined their economic status growing up and then their answer to real life situations about money. With all of this in mind, I decided to create a paper that demonstrates the connections I made and an answer to my essential question, while including other questions that came up for me while analyzing the data.

5/31/22 Final Update:

One Positive Experience:

Working with other people on my project was a positive experience for me because I was able to learn a lot from their guidance. Also, most of the big turning points in my project were through talking about ideas and getting guidance from those around me.

One Surprise:

A surprise for me was doing the interviews. I was worried that people would not feel comfortable enough to share information with me. However, the opposite ended up being true. I was surprised by how much people were willing to share with me during the interviews, and how much information I was able to gather.

One thing I would do differently:

I would have gathered all the data into the spreadsheet sooner so I could have spent more time thinking about the information and making connections between interviews.
