Self-introduction
Wenli Tsou is a Full Professor in the Department of Foreign Languages & Literature and is currently the Director of the Foreign Language Center at National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan. She received her PhD in Foreign and Second Language Education from the State University of New York at Buffalo, U.S. Throughout her productive career as an educational scholar, she has introduced numerous cutting-edge theories and practices to Taiwan’s English and bilingual teacher education. Her research started with introducing pedagogies of picture books and reader theaters in Taiwan’s primary English classrooms. This was followed by her seminal projects focusing on English Teaching and Learning in higher education, contributing to Taiwanese universities’ internationalization effort with professional development projects and publications on English for Specific Purposes (ESP), English-medium instruction (EMI), and global citizenship education. Since 2020, Wenli has been commissioned by the Taiwan Ministry of Education (MOE) to set up in-service professional development programs for bilingual teachers from all over Taiwan. She is also a key promoter for Taiwan MOE’s international education division, responsible for curriculum design and intercultural education implementation in compulsory education to facilitate global competence development. With a team of researchers, Wenli’s most recent research has focused on the links between disciplinary literacy and transknowledging of bilingual education and EMI. She is particularly interested in how these emerging theories and practices can be glocalized in Taiwan. While her research results have been made public at conferences and in scientific publications, they have also been used for designing ESP, EMI, and bilingual teacher education at different educational stages, from primary to higher education. She chairs various international conferences, including the 13th International Conference of English as a Lingua Franca. She has co-edited the following books: Resources for Teaching English for Specific Purposes (2014, Bookman), English as a Medium of Instruction in Higher Education: Implementations & Classroom Practices in Taiwan (2017, Springer), Exploring CLIL: A Resource Book (2018, Bookman), English-Medium Instruction Translanguaging Practices in Asia: Theories, Framework and Implementation in Higher Education (2021, Springer).
