Video of Louie doing what he does best "Playing it Safe!"
We are into our 19th year partnership between the DTE Energy Foundation and the EMU Foundation to deliver DTE Energy’s “Play It Safe Around Electricity” program directly to pre-K and early elementary children, age four to seven primarily, throughout the southeastern region of Michigan. This outreach effort is traditionally arranged in conjunction with Summer Safety Towns® during the months of May through September and other community-based youth programs during the academic year. Through this outreach initiative, little ones learn an elementary understanding of the use of electricity and natural gas along with related safety concerns. A primary instructional goal is to ensure that the participating children are better prepared to respond to an encounter with an electrical or natural gas hazard.
They are taught how to properly remove power cords from outlets and interact daily in a safe manner around electricity. The “Play It Safe Around Electricity” program, with the assistance of Louie the Lightning Bug®, is a community service that teaches young children about electrical and gas safety while promoting a positive understanding of related energy issues with tomorrow’s consumers.
Play It Safe Around Electricity: The support from DTE Energy/DTE Energy Foundation has been vital and this grant ensures our Louie the Lightning Bug program continues to educate and serve children in the community. We have a long history of success working together and prior to the pandemic consistently visited thousands of children every summer. While we were able to start recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic last season, this season was in full swing.
All told the Louie team was able to interact with over 5,300 children. We were happy to once again represent DTE. We are always open to serving our community and we are excited to come and bring the Louie Team to you and your event.
MOORE SYNDICATION LOUIE THE LIGHTNING BUG 40th BIRTHDAY PROMO!
Louie's 40th birthday will be celebrated from October 30th 2023 through October 29th 2024. Louie's humble beginnings date back to 1983 when he was created for a new electrical safety campaign for Alabama Power Company. Louie was chosen from several character options. A series of three :30 TV spots were created. Gene Powers served as creative director and Dave Nelson served as writer. Acclaimed jazz musician Jack Sheldon who provided voice work for Schoolhouse Rock! was recruited to become the distinctive voice of Louie. Famed company Kurtz and Friends Animation brought Louie to life on the screen. Over time, more TV spots were produced by the same creative team as Louie's popularity soared. A 10-minute video incorporating live action and animation was created that featured Louis and six of Louie's favorite safety songs. Over Louie's 40 Years of existence, the character has evolved with the times. Louie began with an incandescent light bulb, then switched to a CFL bulb. Louie's current design features Louie with an energy efficient LED light bulb.
