Welcome to the EMU Math Tutoring Center! All student learners need support that extends beyond the classroom to reinforce and amplify daily lessons. Math anxiety is sometimes a major roadblock to learning mathematics successfully. In the United States, it is estimated that a quarter of students attending four-year colleges experience moderate or high levels of math anxiety. In general, anxiety can be thought of as fear-based responses such as anger, despair, avoidance, negative self-talk, etc. These responses are unpleasant and distract students from the goal of learning.
Fortunately, the EMU Math Tutoring Center (or Math Lab for short) in the Department of Math & Statistics can help students learn to manage these fears so that they can focus their attention on the mathematics they need to understand. Our tutors get students through a concept in an encouraging way without negativity. In the EMU Math Lab we leverage best practices that help alleviate the fear that many students who come in for our services have.
We often discuss goal setting, growth mindsets, and help students create study plans for their coursework. The interaction between our tutors and students plays a huge role in reducing math anxiety. In time, students will be able to:
Identify and acknowledge fears (e.g., "I'm scared I'm going to fail.").
Replace negative self-talk with more realistic (and positive) statements.
Develop a study plan for understanding the mathematics you need to learn and put it into operation.
Develop a plan for dealing with the physical aspects of anxiety (e.g., exercise, caffeine deprivation, relaxation techniques, etc.).
Develop methods of dealing with test anxiety
