The Embracing Self Experience

Dr. Sharon Lee, Psychologist (she/her)

Welcome! I appreciate your interest about me and my work. A brief introduction, I am a licensed psychologist and identify as a 1.5 generation Asian American cis-female identified perfectionist in recovery. As a high-achieving woman growing up with several minority and oppressed intersecting identities, I often found myself in situations where I was pushed to meet others' expectations while sacrificing my own needs. This often followed with anxiety and feelings of imposter syndrome, pushing a need to prove my worth, having my dreams and experiences questioned when it made others uncomfortable, and being asked to flex my boundaries for other's sake. In these experiences, I often felt lost and anxious, moving in the world in an inauthentic way. In my training and work as a Counseling Psychologist, I discovered I am not alone in these experiences! For those who hold several marginalized identities, this is a common experience and dilemma they face in their daily lives. After years of working on my journey of self-compassion, engaging in healing liberation actions, all while also working with others in their mental health and empowerment journey; I realized my passion in working with others looking to find a similar path towards healing in their personal or professional life. My goal with my practice is to help others be able to start or continue their path in embracing themselves wholeheartedly, compassionately, and living authentically to who they are and wish to be.

I have spent the last two decades devoted to supporting young adults and professionals in their mental health and career well-being. My focus has always been on providing culturally affirming mental health and vocational services for Asian American and other People of Color and finding ways to affirm, empower, and uplift my clients and the communities they live in. In addition, I have specialized training and clinical research experience in working with clients with body image and eating concerns.

I have also provided workshops and lectures on topics such as career exploration, adjusting to college life, stress management, work-life balance, suicide prevention, introduction to mindfulness, and Asian American mental health.

Another passion of mine is supervising and training our next generation of therapists and social justice advocates. I have a decade of experience providing primary clinical supervision to doctoral-level trainees (externs, interns, and post-doctoral fellows) in counseling and clinical psychology, teaching in workshops and lectures on diversity and social justice considerations in clinical work, facilitating diversity dialogues, and teaching career counseling seminars.

I have presented at national and regional conferences on topics such as self-compassion for women, career exploration for rural Latinx youth, and effective interventions and strategies for professionals helping international students in their career search. I have guest lectured nationally and internationally at various universities on topics such as Asian American mental health, group therapy, career well-being of international students.

What therapy looks like working with Dr. Lee.

I believe that therapy works best when we collaborate on your goals, and ultimately should be centered around what works best for you. I strive to create a warm and non-judgmental space and am strength-based & anti-oppression-focused. I try to focus on best understanding a person in their context and valuing their intersecting identities.  My interventions come from an integrated combination of CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), ACT (Acceptance Commitment Therapy), compassion-focused and humanistic framework.   I hope that during therapy, you feel heard, understood, and find ways to help make changes to how you treat yourself and others.
