What can you do to directly reduce your carbon footprint?
- Try to run only full loads of laundry and dishes.
- Take shorter and/or
colder showers.
- Get a more water-efficient shower head.
- Cut back on eating beef. On average one pound of beef takes 1,847 gallons of water.
- Buying quality clothing rather than quantity. Fabric takes a lot of water to make.
- Take reusable bags to the grocery store. If you have forgotten reusable bags ask for paper bags.
- Don’t buy more than you will eat, and try to eat all of your leftovers.
- Cut down on meat intake, especially red meat.
- Try composting to reduce your waste. It also functions as a fertilizer after the food has decomposed, and is great for gardening. You can also sign up for a compost service to collect it for you.
- When you leave a room turn the light off.
- You don’t need to get your own solar panels.
Instead, talk to your electricity provider about adding green energy to the grid.
- Use less heated water. Heated water uses 14% of your power.
- Carpooling and public transportation drastically reduce CO2 emissions by spreading them out over many riders.
- If you are looking to get a new car, you should get an electric car if it is in your price range.
- If you are looking to go somewhere near home, walk or bike instead of driving.
- If possible, try not to leave your car idling.
