Our origins are in Judeo-Christian traditions, but today, Unitarian Universalism is a non-creedal tradition that allows members the freedom to search for truth on the path of their choosing. Our congregations uphold several shared principles but individuals may discern their own beliefs about spiritual, ethical and theological issues.
Unitarian Universalist was formed from the merging of two traditions: Unitarianism and Universalism. Unitarianism believed in the unity of God (instead of the predominant "Holy Trinity" doctrine), and Universalism believed in salvation for all (there is no eternal damnation). When these two traditions merged in 1961, they became Unitarian Universalism through the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA).
