We are a student-led body of Unitarian Universalist (and other) students. We promote fellowship and the principles of Unitarian Universalism, provide support for our members and community, and serve as an outlet for social action and discussion among Unitarian Universalists and others seeking an open and accepting religious faith in the college community. Membership is extended to any member of the William & Mary community who agrees to uphold the principles of Unitarian Universalism.
Unitarian Universalism welcomes people of many diverse beliefs. Individual UUs may identify with and draw inspiration from many different religious or philosophical traditions, which can include Atheism, Humanism, Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, Paganism, and more.
Joining only requires that you get involved with a congregation near you. All visitors are welcome and you do not need to renounce your current beliefs to take part. In most congregations, you don't need to be a full member to participate. If you wish to be a full member, however, the Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists has an orientation course - Starting Point - offered for free throughout the year.
We affirm the inherent worth and dignity of every person and social justice is a large part of our mission on campus. As a group we extend a warm welcome to LGBTQ students and community members. We work to promote acceptance, inclusion, understanding and equality for all LGBTQ individuals in Williamsburg and beyond.
That's a hard question to answer; we have several students that openly identify as solely Unitarian Universalist, but we also have several more who are UU and identify with their original faith (such as a UU who calls themself a Christian, or vice versa).
We organize weekly carpools to our local church services that depart from campus at 10:45am on Sunday. In the past we have also held discussion groups, wellness and meditation walks, game nights, coffee hours, and co-sponsored events with other student groups on campus. At the end of the semester, we also hold an on-campus service in the chapel of the Wren Building.
Be sure to check out the Home and Worship with Us pages for event information!
Our group is primarily student-led. However, our Chief Advisor (who is Director of Religious Education at WUU), Austen Petersen, guides us through both leadership and spiritual development. She is an amazing resource for UUs on campus, and is our primary contact with the Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists. Austen can be reached at austen@wuu.org.
We do not have a designated office or space on campus, but we meet wherever is most convenient for our members.
We are affiliated with the Williamsburg Unitarian Universalist congregation, located on Ironbound Road in Williamsburg. You can visit their website here. However, you are not required to join the congregation, and we encountered you to find the spiritual home that's right for you.
