Washington & the Arts is a program I designed for the William & Mary Washington Center. I was the second professor to seize the opportunity, first in 2007, to teach a semester long version of what has always interested me: Arts, Policy Patronage, and the National Narrative. During the semester long version of the course students pursued 30-hour-a-week internships at a variety of institutions from National Geographic Magazine, to NPR, to Smithsonian Museums, to the Kennedy Center. Some students worked for individual artists and others worked at political think tanks. My role was to teach two courses, Music and Community in the National Capital, and our Friday Seminar in the City, in addition to helping students to think critically about their internships. In 2019 and at the request of DC Center directors I taught a much-updated version of the semester which began, remarkably with 3 weeks of government shut down.

This January, 2022 I taught a Winter Seminar on Washington and the Arts, this time focusing on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. 15 of us did an ethnography of the city through the lens of the arts and activism. Covid, winter weather, and Martin Luther King Day helped to shape our experience in unique and exciting ways.
