Event: 3rd Annual Student Leadership Conference

Primary Theme: Learn Today, Lead Tomorrow

Key words/other themes: Building lifelong resources, civic engagement, community service, leadership development, service learning, student engagement, servant-leadership, and teambuilding.

Target population(s): College, university, high school, homeschool, and dual enrollment students; and students/clients participating in community-based and workforce development programs.

Statement of Purpose: The overarching purpose of this event is to provide a professional development opportunity that will (a) engage students in service learning-related activities, in order to encourage civic engagement, leadership skills development, and teamwork; and to (b) demonstrate that Camp Community College provides civic engagement opportunities in alignment with its vision, mission, goals and values, and policies established by the State Council of Higher Education Virginia (SCHEV).

Rationale: Extract: "The SCHEV Policy on Quality and Assessment of Undergraduate Education names civic engagement as a core competency in order to emphasize the vital importance of the work colleges have already been doing in this area, and to encourage institutions to think in a more focused and deliberate manner about how they are preparing students to become better citizens. Civic engagement is too important an outcome to be left to chance.” To learn more about this policy, and to access data, instructional, and assessment resources, please click on the following link: https://www.schev.edu/index/agency-info/additionalactivities/civic-engagement-education-and-assessment-meeting
