Leadership Development Session

Accelerating Excellence: How To Drive What’s Inside Of You Towards Success

Have you ever asked yourself “what is my purpose?” or “what am I going to do next?” Nisan Trotter believes that life is more than existing – it’s about excelling! He knows the difference between living versus truly being alive. Imagine life no longer looking black and white, but instead, HD, Plasma Screen – with all the fancy colors! When you excitedly believe you are gifted, discover your gift, and begin to take it to superstar status, choosing a major, making a decision on what clubs or organizations to join, picking friends, and even figuring out next steps after school is no longer overwhelming.

In this leadership program, Nisan Trotter empowers students to explore their passions and identify their natural gifts and talents to help them accelerate their excellence. He helps them focus on the fun of self-discovery and self-mastery as he believes students can leverage their collegiate experience to conquer gigantic goals, missions, and ambitions. After spending time with Nisan, students will feel energized to lead their own life on fire and dominate their paths.

Learning Outcomes

As a result of attending this program, students will learn:

· Why their “childish” belief in cartoon characters, superheroes and even the tooth fairy mattered

· The seven important questions to ask en route to discovering their gift

· How to eliminate weapons of mass distraction, keep the main thing “the main thing,” and strike out to strike it big with your gift

· The key difference between a life structured around a gift versus a gift structured around a life (and which is better)

· Why college life is the best life to start dreaming and growing their gift to super size

Pre-Conference

The pre-conference will be open to registered participants from 8:30 a.m. – 9:15 a.m. on the day of the event. Select tabletop displays will be available for viewing in Technology Center at the event site. Pre-conference participants will be able to speak directly with a staff/representatives of local fraternities and sororities; Camp’s student clubs/activities including Student Government Association (SGA), Athletics, PTK National Honor Society, AAUW Student Chapter, Upward Bound, Male Mentoring Program and Student Support Services. Otherwise, guests may visit these tables during normal conference hours, when the tables are not manned.

Statement of Purpose:

The overarching purpose of the conference is to provide a professional development opportunity that will (a) engage students in a service learning activity, in order to encourage civic engagement, leadership skills, and teamwork, and to (b) demonstrate that the host institution includes civic engagement in its culture and co-curricular functions, in alignment with its vision, mission, goals and values, and policies mandated by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV).

Rationale:

Extract: “The SCHEV Policy on Quality and Assessment of Undergraduate Education names civic engagement as a core competency in order to emphasize the vital importance of the work colleges have already been doing in this area, and to encourage institutions to think in a more focused and deliberate manner about how they are preparing students to become better citizens. Civic engagement is too important an outcome to be left to chance.”

Snapshot of Sessions:

Students will be split into two groups of 100 each to participate in two rotating sessions: (a) a session focusing on leadership development and (b) a session that involves a hands on service learning activity (i.e. packaging dry food goods on an assembly line that will be shipped to those in need). Sessions will last approximately 1 to 1 ½ hours. In particular, each student group will work collaboratively on the assembly line to package 15,000 meals for a total of 30,000 meals. Note: The assembly line will be setup the day before the event by the vendor and student volunteers that have already been selected.

Waiver.

Vendor contracting is in progress. Participants including students, chaperones and volunteers will be asked to sign a waiver form that will be provided once contracts are finalized.
