The Allies

The United States joined the efforts of WWI as a member of the Allies fighting against the Central Powers. The Allies were made up the United Kingdom, Russia, France, Japan, and Italy, who were all dragged into the war following a chain reaction of countries declaring war caused by rising tensions in Europe (1). The United States joined the war following concerns of the well-being of the world if the Central Powers were victorious. The Allies eventually won the war and helped to break up power in Europe.

The Central Powers

The Central Powers are considered to be the opposing side in the WWI conflict. The Central Powers were made up of Austria-Hungary, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire (3). The Central Powers were the losing side of the war and were punished for the crimes they committed. This included the seperation of their land and declaring new nations in Europe.

The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

The assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand is widely considered to be the spark that lit WWI. The assassination of the Archduke took place in 1914 and caused outrage in Austria-Hungary. Following this, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, and their allies followed (5). Following this declaration, the Allies formed to protect Serbia from the Central Powers.

League of Nations

The development of the League of Nations came following the commencement of WWI. The formation of the League of Nations came with the intent to create world peace and punish the nations that lost WWI. Despite President Wilson being a large factor in the creation for the League of Nations and an advocate for it, the United States government voted to not join the alliance (7).

U.S. Business in WWI

The United States took advantage of WWI not being fought on their home continent by becoming involved in the business aspect of the war. The United States used its industries to produce weapons and technology that countries fighting had a use for. Their involvement in the business aspect of the war eventually led to them picking a side and involving themselves in the war (9).
