Museum Internship, Augusta Military Academy Museum

Museum Internship / Helen Charleton Endowment
The Museum of the Augusta Military Academy preserves the story of one of America’s first military prep
schools. Although 109 years of raising and educating boys came to a sudden end in 1983, visionary alumni
knew that if stories of the cadets’ experiences and accomplishments could be preserved, they would engage a
broad audience for generations to come. In many ways, a boy’s life at AMA was unique to his time and place,
but anyone who has ever been a young student will find much that is familiar in the stories and artefacts that
make up the AMA legacy. This museum to pass on that legacy is housed on the grounds of the former
academy in the 1879 home of its founder.
To help carry on the mission of the AMA Museum, Helen Charleton established an internship in memory of her
late husband, William Curtis Charleton (’15). The Charleton Internship includes compensation for up to 600
hours per year of services rendered under the direction of the Museum Executive Director.
Duties of the AMA Museum intern include but are not limited to:
• Helping the Museum Director with administrative needs.
• Assisting the Museum Curator in developing and deploying exhibits.
• Conducting research for museum exhibits and school alumni.
• Assisting the Museum Docent with guided tours and activities.
• Assisting the Museum Director with reunion operations and other special events.
• Managing retail transactions in the museum gift shop.
Located on Route 11 in Ft. Defiance, Virginia, the museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
Hours for the intern are flexible and will be set in consultation with the Museum Director.
