Introductory Chemistry I, CHM 101

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course emphasizes experimental and theoretical aspects of inorganic, organic, and biological chemistry. It discusses general chemistry concepts as they apply to issues within our society and environment and is designed for the non-science major. This course will cover a variety of topics and concepts in the text book and will encompass discussion forums, homework, quizzes, and tests. The chapters covered are stated in the course’s Tentative Schedule and correspond to the chapter objectives as provided in the syllabus.


General Course Objectives:

    • Help students develop an understanding of basic chemical vocabulary, principles and problem solving techniques.

    • Expose students to the role of chemistry in their world.

    • Understand the basic principles of chemistry as outlined in the learning objectives.

The detailed Chapter Objectives for each chapter are posted for each chapter assignments. A link is also provided to the Course Outline


COURSE PREREQUISITES

    • Although this course meets in a classroom, many of the course materials are only available online through Blackboard or Connect/LearnSmart; students should be willing to use online resources.

    • The student should be comfortable with algebra. The student should be enrolled in MTH 154 or higher.
