Know the Lingo

Here's a list of words and phrases that will appear a lot in the writing and screenshots in this project.

• Fanwar: An online argument between fans of different celebrities and/or musical artists. Usually involves insults about the celebrities and/or the stan accounts themselves.

• Parasocial relationship: An imagined relationship one has with a person they do not know, usually a celebrity.

• Ratio: When people quote someone's Tweet to give it more quotes than it has likes, effectively bringing the like to quote-tweet ratio down. Also used when replying to someone's Tweet in an effort to get more likes than the original poster.

• Stan: A portmanteau of "stalker fan," this word originated from the song Stan by Eminem ft. Dido. The song's lyrics are about an obsessive Eminem fan, who writes the rapper letters that detail his mental health and relationship problems while begging Eminem to be with him romantically. At the end of the song, Stan ends up killing himself and his girlfriend. Nowadays, "stan" is used with a much more casual interpretation, meaning a fan who is very involved in the activities of their favorite celebrity/s.

• twt: a shortened version of Twitter. Often used in correlation with different fandoms on Twitter (i.e. "stan twt," "kpop twt," "book twt").
