The requirements for promotion in the Fire Services have shifted from being based only on one's years of experience to a promotion system based on a combination of education and experience. Because I want to progress in the Fire Services industry, the logical next step is to return to school and earn a degree. I decided that Northern Virginia Community College's Fire Science Technology A.A.S. program was the best place to start. I have developed long and short term goals that align with my personal and professional aspirations to help me build a successful career and life in Northern Virginia.
The first step is to complete the A.A.S. degree in Fire Science Technology, which will allow me to seek a promotion to the rank of Captain. Since moving to Northern Virginia, I have grown to love it and would like to build my life and career here. A promotion and pay raise would help in saving money to buy a house.

Complete the A.A.S degree in Fire Science Technology from NOVA.
Advance to the rank of Captain.
Participate in at least two professional development opportunities, such as training or conferences.

Once I have completed my associate's degree, I plan to continue into a bachelor's program in Public Administration or Fire Service Administration. After I complete a bachelor's degree, I will have reached my formal education goals. I plan to continue seeking career advancement opportunities, such as becoming an adjunct Fire Instructor.

Within 10 years, I will have my formal education requirements completed. I plan to continue seeking professional opportunities in preparation for advancing to the rank of Assistant Chief or earning a position with the International Association of Fire Fighters. I want to be financially secure with a concrete retirement plan in place. I would also like to be in a position financially where I can purchase a home in Northern Virginia.
