Italy did not face severe setbacks or traumas like the hundred years war in France and was affected as much as everyone else by the Black Death. A benefit Italy had was the Popes lack of political power, which allowed it to operate without much interference from the church. On the other hand, Italian noble families would interfere with Papal elections if it suited their interests. The rest of Europe at the could not or did not want trouble with Italy Italian cities were larger and closer together that most had great trade relations and were on good terms with each other. This would also be great in an invasion as they would be more likely to send out armies to push back invaders

Though the western roman empire had fallen, the Italian cities were doing fine. Due to feudalism not having a strong hold in the cities and the fact that the nobles and merchants did not want to answer to lords, especially if they were outside the city, the governing bodies of said cities were the nobles and merchant, they were Known as Popoli Grossi, aka the Fat people. The culture of the nobility was ripe with backstabbing, drama and gossip. In order to hold power and authority social standing was almost everything except for honor. The Press
The printing press was an invention that revolutionized information storing and spreading capabilities. The ability to mass produce pages without back breaking labor was something for the ages as what would take months could now only take days. It also did phenomenal work for play writes. The scripts could be easily made by moving the letter keys around, and they could easily be mass produced as long as you had paper. The pamphlets for the plays could be given to anyone within reason and everyone would tell their associates as everyone loved drama.

Florence was a republic that had a tradition of civic government. Fun fact it was also the birthplace of Dante Alighieri. It was also the birthplace of banking as we know it today, see the church basically had laws against collecting loans, with interest and as the Medici family rose in power, they began to collect loan with interest growing overtime and eventually other banks began to do the same practice. The Church would be unable to stop this trend despite immense effort. The Medici family sponsored some of the most famous artists in the Renaissance, including Michaelangelo and De Vinci. The Medici family were also philanthropists in a sense as they donated large sums of money to fund major projects for the city.
