Auditory processing disorder (APD), also known as central auditory processing disorder (CAPD), refers to a condition that impacts the brain's ability to filter and interpret sounds (Pesantez, 2025).

*There is a debate as to whether APD is a disorder separate from ADHD. APD does not exist on the DSM-V*
People with APD have normal hearing abilities, but their brains have a hard time receiving, organizing and making sense of sound. Auditory processing disorder is typically diagnosed in school-age children.
Signs and Symptoms include:
Difficulty hearing speech in noisy environment
Difficulty maintaining attention
Problems locating the source of a sound
Difficulty following directions
Commonly asking for information to be repeated
Inability to detect subtle changes in tone
Distracted and inattentive behavior
Difficulty learning to read
Academic difficulties, including poor reading and spelling
Difficulty hearing speech in a noisy environment
(Irishukraine, 2024)
APD can also be called King-Kopetzky syndrome
Affects 0.5-1.0% of people worldwide
APD can be caused by head injuries
Adults with APD might experience difficulty with multitasking
ADHD is a similar symptom

Audiograms: A graph that visually represents the results of a pure-tone hearing test
Binaural: Bilateral (both ears) presentation of an auditory signal
Cognition: Mental process that take place in the brain, including but limited to attention, memory, and language processing
Decibel: Unit of measurement of sound intensity. Higher decibels mean louder sounds
ENT: A doctor of otolaryngologist
Volume: Quantity or power of sound; degree of loudness
Tomatis Method Protocol: Auditory stimulation that rewires neural connections that contribute to listening, cognition, balance, coordination, and emotional regulation
Neurodegenerative: A disease that leads to cellular death
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Developmental disorder that include symptoms such as inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity
Parts of the brain affected by Auditory Processing Disorder (Perez, 2024)
Auditory processing disorder affects the auditory cortex. Other brain regions involved include Temporal lobe: Identifies pitch and rhythm. Broca's area: Involved in language processing, affecting speech production and comprehension.

Study Finds Tomatis Method for simulating audition helps reduce errors in people with APD
Ross-Swain (2007) gave 41 people with auditory processing disorder therapy to improve their processing skills. They spent 90 hours teaching them the Tomatis Method protocol. All subjects showed improvement afterwards. This study suggests behavioral therapy can reduce symptoms of APD.
