Hi, welcome to the world of ECME!
Environmental Contaminants and Microbial Ecology Laboratory Guidelines (Check below for English version)
· Data Recording Principles: Experimental raw data must be accurately recorded in the laboratory notebook issued by the school (if all the notebooks in the lab have been used, please apply a new one at the Industry-Academia Collaboration Center, 2nd floor) and the cloud drive provided by the PI. Post-filling or modifying data after experiments is strictly prohibited.
· Result Disclosure and Discussion: All members must participate regularly in lab meetings to honestly report and discuss experimental results and data. If unable to attend, please request leave from the professor and consider changing laboratories if necessary.
· Compliance with Academic Standards: When writing theses or conference posters, proper citation rules must be followed to respect original contributions and co-authors.
· Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): When handling pesticides, heavy metals, or toxic solvents, laboratory coats, nitrile gloves, and protective goggles or face shields must be worn.
· Clear Labeling of Reagents: All pesticide reagents in the laboratory must be clearly labeled with the name, concentration, user, and date. The use of unidentified reagents is prohibited.
· Waste Management: Waste liquids generated from pesticide and toxicity experiments must be collected separately according to the 'Pesticide Toxic Liquid Waste Barrel' rules and must not be mixed with microbial or general waste liquids.
· Sterile Operation Protocols: Microbial cultivation must be conducted in a sterile operating cabinet, disinfected with alcohol wipes and UV light before and after use.
· Strain Labeling and Storage: All isolated strains and microbes used in toxicity tests must be clearly labeled with strain number, date, source, and storage temperature.
· Prevention of Cross-Contamination: Toxicity contact tests and microbial cultivation must be performed in separate areas to avoid cross-contamination. All functional strains to be preserved must be stored in the -80°C freezer (located in Professor Shen's laboratory) before graduation.
· Backup of Experimental Data: Research progress reports, original Excel data files, analysis graphs, and photos must be uploaded to the cloud monthly, with a printed copy kept in the laboratory notebook.
· Shared Equipment Registration: Equipment such as HPLC, spectrophotometers, and pH meters must be booked in advance, and the usage status must be recorded after operation.
· Exit or Graduation Handover: Before concluding research, members must complete the organization of data, strains, and chemical inventories, and complete data and account handover procedures.
· Maintain Clean Environment: After experiments, glassware must be washed, work surfaces cleaned, and the operation area restored to cleanliness. A full laboratory cleaning is conducted at the end of each month, with all members required to participate.
· Incident Reporting: In case of chemical spills, strain leaks, equipment malfunctions, or personal injuries, immediately notify the PI and Alice.
· Leave Policy: Absences longer than three consecutive days must be reported in advance to the PI and lab members, and work handover must be arranged.
· Principles of Experimental Collaboration: Respect others' research work. Permission must be obtained before using others’ reagents, data, or instruments.
· A thesis draft must be submitted to the PI at least two months before the scheduled oral defense.
· Thesis files, original data, and figures must be retained in an editable format (e.g., EndNote or Mendeley) without deleting reference formatting.
· Before leaving, a draft paper must also be submitted to the PI.
