Optimizing High Quality Digital Learning Experiences - A Playbook for Faculty

Learning to teach online is a developmental process, an iterative course refinement process. As such, the authors of this guide encourage faculty to embrace this learning on multiple levels. This updated playbook is organized to guide educators through the learning process to help operationalize
best practices in face-to-face and online instruction through a stepwise process: design, enhance, and optimize.

A Meta-Analysis and Review of Online Learning Studies

The U.S. Department of Education’s 2010 study “Evaluation of Evidence-Based Practices in Online Learning: A Meta-Analysis and Review of Online Learning Studies” noted that: “Students in online conditions performed modestly better, on average, than those learning the same material through traditional face-to-face instruction” (p. xiv) and, notably, “Instruction combining online and face-to-face elements had a larger advantage relative to purely face-to-face instruction than did purely online instruction” (p. xv).

Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor

LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment in Blackboard Learn (Original or Ultra Course View). When students use LockDown Browser to take a Blackboard test, they are unable to print, copy, go to other websites, access other applications, or close a test until it is submitted for grading.

Respondus Monitor is a fully-automated proctoring solution. Students use a webcam to record themselves during an online exam. Afterward, flagged events and proctoring results are available to the instructor for further review.
