Though LazyDaizy claims that there isn’t much to tell about herself, her huge body of work in the Riverdale fandom and her passion for writing indicate otherwise. When I was first getting into the bughead fandom, I kept seeing her works on my dashboard. I clicked on one and was HOOKED right away - she takes my favorite characters, developing their personalities in different ways before putting them into action in her fics.
LazyDaizy first started to read fanfic following the end of the show Beauty & the Beast, but really took the plunge into a fandom following the end of Riverdale’s season one. She wanted more Bughead and went hunting for it, finding it on Tumblr and Ao3; from there it was a quick jump into the world of writing.
In truth, it was a quick jump back into writing because LazyDaizy is a lifelong writer who experienced a reawakening through her work in the fandom. After a rough patch a few years ago, she had nearly fully given up on writing. Everything changed when she was inspired to open her laptop again this past June.
Now LazyDaizy writes everyday, devoting nearly three hours every night to her craft and keeping readers entertained with frequent updates. As she explained to me, her mind is always writing and it’s just a matter of getting everything typed up the way she wants it. One strength of her writing is the realism that comes through in what her characters do and feel and say; this is, in part, due to the different experiences she plucked from her own life and wrote into her stories. LazyDaizy describes her life as inspiration and her writing as therapy.
LazyDaizy has a busy life, on- and offline. She’s a stay at home mom, owner of a small home business, wife and author. She describes her husband as not just a huge supporter of her writing, but as a source of (romantic) inspiration. Along with her husband, her (offline) best friend encourages her to keep writing and reads LazyDaizy’s work whenever she has a chance.
LazyDaizy has developed a complex online circle of friends whom she communicates with regularly. There is an outer circle of about 30 individuals, 10 of whom she speaks to fairly regularly. Most of their talk is fandom-related, but there are 3 people that she’s formed a stronger relationship. LazyDaizy’s best (online) friend is her other half in what she calls an “odd couple” friendship. Different in so many ways (age and geographical location being just two), they have had fun talking together and, in the process, have formed a strong bond.
As much as LazyDaizy loves writing (especially fanfic), she has sworn she will never again join a fandom. Her relationship with the show in season two is less enjoyable - she felt less stress when she was just enjoying each episode in the first season, before the spoilers and theories. And, like all other fandoms, Riverdale has its combatants. LazyDaizy tries to stay out of the drama as much as possible. She explained that people will fight about the show and their personal interpretations of the plot. No matter how hard you try, she explained, you sometimes get dragged into the mess. Some of the confrontations can get pretty personal, with some blogs going so far as to target one another. LazyDaizy’s answers gave me the sense that she has almost no involvement in this aspect of the fandom, preferring to read and write fics and socialize with her online circle of friends to getting involved in fandom wars.
At least in this fandom, the writing seems to focus more on the show than any of the writer’s fics, sparing her from more personal attacks common to RPF. There are some readers who are rude or overly critical, but, for the most part, people are kind and supportive. When LazyDaizy is harassed by readers, it’s usually about when she will be updating her stories. She handles it by ignoring them or posting a “shrug” emoji. Really, that is her only recourse - she explained that reporting people does nothing, though she has exercised the option to block people on Tumblr.
For someone who has a pretty active online social circle, LazyDaizy’s writing process is surprisingly independent. She describes herself as a one woman operation: she writes, edits and posts with no beta. Once LazyDaizy has an idea, she lets it roll around in her head until she has a basic plan for how she wants the story to develop. Before she really starts writing, LazyDaizy typically has the beginning, middle and end - the major plot points - in mind. The details of the story line comes to her as she’s writing so she’s never too married to a plan. Sometimes she gets feedback from others, but mostly she allows the story to develop itself.
When I asked LazyDaizy if she’d ever be interesting in collaborating with another fanfic writer, she gave me a pretty firm no. As her own toughest critic, she feels it would be too difficult to introduce another writer into her process. She has a backlog of ideas for fics that she is currently wading through, and there just isn’t room for anyone else in her brain.
I can honestly say that one of the (many) things that genuinely impresses me about LazyDaizy is her drive.
