"This is my cousin Jamie," Connor says as he shoulders his gear bag. "She has poor decision making skills." - or that time that hapless police officer Jamie Neal fell in love with a Pittsburgh Penguin while serving as a flophouse for Hockey Jesus.

Nori Ri *did not* steal a Greek amphora depicting Zeus’s birth this weekend.

HannahJane is always writing - literally. She carries a notebook with her at all times, ever prepared to jot down a new idea. And her trusty smartphone holds both GoogleDrive and different note apps that allow her to record bits and pieces here and there. As she told me, “A lot of people think I’m texting or writing an email and I’m really just writing fanfiction.” HannahJane finds inspiration everywhere, from her personal and work life to Tumblr prompt and even from Hallmark movies.
Like many of the authors I’ve connected with, HannahJane has been at the fanfic game for a long while, having moved between multiple verses since she started in high school with Stargate (her favorite show growing up) fanfic. She enjoys the escape from the real world that reading and writing fanfiction provide her with. In fact, she told me that she reads more than she writes because of the joy she takes from immersing herself in a fandom that she truly loves.
HannahJane truly seems to love the writing process, explaining that she much prefers long pieces over short ones, especially because she enjoys the research process that goes into creating the characters and the stories in their verses. The process is fairly solitary for her - she’s never had a beta or shown her writing with anyone in her offline life. Her wife does know about her writing, but HannahJane has never shared with her. In fact, she described herself as somewhat unusual because she is very much on the fringes of the fanfic community. However, she is happy there because the writing - not the community - is the reward for her.
HannahJane’s process is a methodical one: she gets an idea down and develops it by adding bullet points in the areas she wants to expand her thoughts. She described this process as loosely mapping out the ideas in outline form so she can then fill in the details when she’s actually writing the fic. HannahJane did mention that she has moments when she wishes she had a beta, but has just never been comfortable with the idea of another person scrutinizing her work and then discussing it with her. She prefers to read and reread a piece (as many as five times), making necessary changes each time until it feels perfect for her. Then it is ready to post.
One of the more fun elements of HannahJane’s writing is her tendency to create romantic comedies. She’s never felt comfortable writing intense sex scenes, preferring to stay away from things that make her sound like a “Harlequin romance.” Rather, she prefers to allow her characters to develop healthy relationships that ultimately lead to happy endings. The results are pieces that have lovely feeling to them - a mood that is truly hard to create. It’s a delicate balance of humor and romance that stays on the firmly in “so sweet” without falling into “so corny.”
Do yourself a favor and read her Perils of Jamie series; the main character, Jamie, is a somewhat clumsy but overall competent police officer with a fantastic Russian sidekick helping her fight crime on the mean streets of Pittsburgh. These imperfect but genuine characters are relatable and really have you rooting for them to find love. This makes sense given that, for HannahJane, writing is therapy, a thing that allows her to step into a better world where things work out for the main characters in just the way you hope they will.
The happiness that characters in her stories experience is the same happiness that HannahJane finds in her writing process. She writes for herself and because it brings her joy so it makes sense that her characters find love and peace in their own adventures. HannahJane told me that she loves the anonymity of the online community and has no real desire to publish her work elsewhere - the occasional email or comment that she receives from satisfied readers are enough for her. Writing is an act that belongs entirely to her and provides her a “world to escape into.” Looking at it from that point of view helps me to understand why HannahJane, an undoubtedly talented writer, eschews attention and is happy to quietly create.
