We perform an immunoassay on paper-based microfluidics, and then analyze the data using a smartphone fluorescence microscope. The images are quantified using image processing software, to statistically estimate if there is virus or not in the water sample!
The actual detection of norovirus is all done using something called an immunoassay. Imagine something just like a pregnancy checker...but for viruses!
How do we know if the immunoassay detected any virus? We created a cheap smartphone-microscope that takes pictures of the virus.
Even with a great immunoassay and smartphone-microscope, it is really hard for human eyes to recognize if virus is present in our images. We use image processing to determine if the virus is present.
