This course will help you become a better reader, writer and an overall stronger student. Throughout the year, we will work on reading and writing to prepare us for college and the Common Core Regents that we will take in our junior year. We will take a midterm and a final. We will read and prepare for our futures!
Please use this website as a place of reference to get all information about the class. All of your long term assignments will be submitted on google classroom and turnitin.com. These are often out of class assignments. All due dates and work will be listed on google classroom. All homework and short term assignments will be listed on our classroom whiteboard. Students are responsible for keeping track of their homework.
We will have a great year together!
Tests/ Essays are 100-200 points
Quizzes and short writing assignments are 25-50 points
Homework is 5-10 points
Late work can be accepted but will lose five points per day.
All work must be made up in a timely fashion.
Once the unit is complete, no late work will count.
The homework for this course is primarily reading. When we are reading plays, your homework will be questions that are based upon today's reading. We will be reading at home to prepare for class discussions and activities. Reading homework will be assessed by small quizzes which are given randomly. Students will receive a reading schedule at the beginning of every unit. Any unfinished classwork should be completed for homework.
Complete homework regularly.
For longer assignments, due dates and specific requirements will be given at the introduction of the assignment.
Homework assignments are timely. I will do my best to give you the schedule early so you can plan your work accordingly. I will not give you busy homework.
What to expect in this class:
We will write one major assignment each quarter. We will have a major assessment at the conclusion of every unit. They will count for 100 points. You should expect a major assignment due at the conclusion and midway through a piece of literature.
As a class, we will read plays in class with some independent worksheets to complete as our homework and we will read at least four assigned novels at home. We will have writing journals attached to our reading schedule.
Major Assignments:
English 1oH will take a midterm in January that will count for the third quarter. It will count as 12 percent of your final average in my class. We will have a final assessment in June. I will give you the exact dates and times as we get closer.
This class will prepare you for the future AP courses that we offer in English, college writing and our other English electives. We will work on preparing for your future content as well as deepen your analysis in English. This class will be reading and writing class. We will do fun, creative, thought-provoking and interesting projects and we will have a discussion-based class that is student-led.
You are expected to care for yourself and each other.
This means:
1) Smartphones, watches, etc. are not allowed in the class period.
2) Keep your area clean. Throw out your garbage. Clean your hands. Please leave the area the way you found it. Please do not leave food, wrappers, papers in the classroom.
3) Complete your work to the best of your ability. You should be proud of each assignment that you submit to me.
4) Do not plagiarize. It is so tempting when you have the technology so close to you. I would rather you work through a tough assignment that cut corners. You will not receive credit if it is plagiarized.
5) Be kind to others- always. We all do not look alike; we all have various experiences that shape us. We need to be kind. If someone disagrees with you and your belief, be respectful. You can argue in this class but you cannot berate anyone. Language and tone are very important. They must be respectful. It is important to always remember that everyone has the right to feel comfortable in safe in this class and in this school. If behavior continues, administration will have to be involved.
6) Ask for help! I will be happy to help you in any way.
7) Be ready when the bell rings. You should begin your do-now activity at the start of the class period. We will work bell to bell so please be sure to stay focused.
Classroom Procedures-
1) At the bell, students are ready to go. You need to be in your seat with your notebooks out.
2) Students will complete a short warm up activity.
3) Students may use the bathroom one at a time. You must sign out and you can not use the bathroom during the first five minutes of the period or the last five minutes of the period.
4) If you leave the room, you must have a pass.
5) You must be respectful of the class, the classroom, your teachers and your peers. It is very important that you remember that we are in this together and we can learn from each other.
4) Cellphones, airpods, or any other distracting device will not be in class. If these items become a problem, they will be taken to the main office.
