We refer to the time for writing instruction as “Writing Workshop”. The children will learn to write like published authors. Like authors, they will be writing something for someone. They will be writing true stories (personal narratives and small moments), informational books (“how-to” and “all about” books), persuasive reviews/opinions, and realistic fiction stories. They will be writing for each other and for you. Like authors, they will choose their own topics, write, practice revising, editing and publishing.
Your child’s writing will change in dramatic ways across the year. Not only will their content become more detailed, but their sentences will become easier to read as your child learns to leaves spaces between words, uses a repertoire of familiar words, and becomes more skilled with using phonemic awareness and phonics.
Throughout the year, we will be cleaning out our writing folders. Some things will stay in school while other writing pieces will go home. Please keep the following in mind when reading the pieces that come home...
Az ur child brings hom riting 4 the frst tim, doo not be srprized at the speling. The inglish langwij iz a confusing langwij 2 lern. Insisting that stoodents uz "correct" speling at this tim inhibits thair dzir, and abilite 2 rit. We uz "phonetic" speling in r wrk.
Az parints, u can hlp ur child bi prazing awl thair riting. Let ur child red thair riting 2 u. Displa thair riting arownd ur hows. No that as ur child bcums fumilyr with the inglish langwij throo reeding and riting, he or she wil mak the tranzishun to "correct" speling.
Thank u 4 ur suport!
“A picture is worth a thousand words…”
Young writers sometimes need inspiration. They need help with ideas for their writing. We’d like the children to keep a homemade scrapbook page with photographs in their writing folder for inspiration.
Please help your child make a scrapbook page that shows people, activities and occasions that are important to them. You can even help them label the pictures. You can use the card stock page we sent home or you can use your own paper. The page must fit in their folder. All pages will be returned to you.
