Adopt a Traffic Signal Box is a public art project sponsored by the City of Elmira. Experienced, emerging or student artists are invited to submit an application to paint a Traffic Signal Box. A “Best of Show” Traffic Signal Box will be honored each season by the Elmira Public Art Commission. Paint and painting materials are covered by the Adopt-a-Traffic Signal Box Public Art Program. Applicants may not use any materials other than those provided by the Public Art Commission.
Elmira College professors Jan Kather (Media Arts) and Aaron Kather (Drawing, Painting & Illustration) submitted a design proposal based on one of their favorite things to do in Elmira: BICYCLE! The abstract design evolved from a photo taken of a cast shadow of Jan and her bicycle overlaying the lines of a crosswalk. Their selection of lively bright red and blue shapes, intertwined with black, suggests the vibrant challenge and thrill of riding their bicycles from Eldridge Park southeast onto the Lackawanna Rail Trail. The design only hints at a rider, a bicycle, and a crosswalk.
Applicants may request a specific location, but the Public Arts Commission reserves the right to designate eligible Traffic Signal Boxes. Jan and Aaron requested any traffic box near Eldridge Park or the Lackawanna Rail Trail. The Commission selected the corner of Woodlawn and College Avenues.
