It works to meet the diverse and changing needs of the community in which it operates, and currently runs social programs which focus on education, workforce development, and connecting families with additional services they may need. Honor Flight is an organization that recognizes senior veterans of World War II and the Korean War by sending them on a one-day, all-expense-paid trip to Washington D.C. During this trip (called a "flight"), while veterans tour the memorials built in their honor, they swap memories, form bonds with each other, and are celebrated, honored, and given the respect they deserve.
Honor Flight Chicago (HFC) is one of the largest in a network of Honor Flight hubs, having flown 87 flights serving a total of 7,929 veterans since it was founded in 2008. Interact Club has collected $1200 for Honor Flight Chicago, enough to send one veteran to Washington, D.C. for their Day of Honor. We have also written letters for veterans to receive on their trip and listened to Jim Bull, a Korean War veteran who went on a HFC flight, speak about his experience. In the future, we hope to participate in a Welcome Home celebration for veterans when they return to Midway Airport after their flight. Nothing But Nets is a global grassroots campaign of the United Nations Foundation with the ultimate goal of eradicating malaria, a disease which kills a child every two minutes worldwide. It raises funds and awareness for the issue, and most importantly provides insecticide-treated bed nets to people living in areas where they are at a high risk for contracting malaria. These nets are life-saving because they protect families from malaria-carrying mosquitoes while they sleep. Nothing But Nets has also trained healthcare workers and has provided malaria treatment and diagnostics since it began in 2006.
