Students should be practicing their multiplication facts every day! Try making flash cards at home using notecards and spending a few minutes each night going through them. There are also some great websites where students can practice their math facts - check out some of the ones I have listed under the "Important Links" sections! Becoming familiar, fluent, and confident with multiplication facts is very important as we continue to move through the math curriculum in 4th grade. Make a point to spend some time practicing them each day!
We have adopted Eureka Math as our math curriculum. With this curriculum, we aim to create problem solvers and critical thinkers who can:
- Make sense of never-before seen, "messy" problems and persevere in solving them
- Construct viable arguments involving mathematics and statistics and critique the reasoning of others
In math, we have an "in flip" flipped classroom. This means students get their instruction for math through an interactive video lesson. Students watch and interact with the video on a website called Nearpod. This method of instruction allows students to learn at their own pace, rewinding and rewatching sections of the lesson as needed. The teacher is then freed up to either work with small groups for instruction or touch base with students who have been struggling with a certain concept. If you have any questions about this, please feel free to reach out and ask me! I would love to chat about it with you.
Unit 1, Eureka Module 1 – Place Value, Rounding, and Algorithms for Addition and Subtraction
Students are extending their work with whole numbers and work closely with the place value chart in order to compare whole numbers, round, and work on becoming fluent with the standard algorithms for addition and subtraction.
Topic A – Place Value of Multi Digit Whole Numbers
Topic B – Comparing Multi-Digit Whole Numbers
Topic C – Rounding Multi-Digit Whole Numbers
*Mid-Module Assessment – covers Topics A-C*
Topic D – Multi-Digit Whole Numbers Addition
Topic E – Multi-Digit Whole Number Subtraction
Topic F – Addition and Subtraction Word Problems
Focus Standards: 4.OA.3, 4.NBT.1, 4.NBT.2, 4.NBT.3, 4.NBT.4
Unit 2, Eureka Module 2 – Unit Conversions and Problem Solving with Metric Measurement
Students focus on length, mass, and capacity in the metric system where place value serves as a natural guide for moving between larger and smaller units.
Topic A – Metric Unit Conversions
Topic B – Application of Metric Unit Conversions
Focus Standards: 4.MD.1, 4.MD.2
Unit 3, Eureka Module 3 – Multi-Digit Multiplication and Division
Students use place value understanding and visual representations to solve multiplication and division problems with multi-digit numbers. Students learn to reason about the methods and models chosen to solve problems with multi-digit factors and dividends.
Topic A – Multiplicative Comparison Word Problems
Topic B – Multiplication by 10, 100, and 1,000
Topic C – Multiplication of up to Four Digits by Single-Digit Numbers
Topic D – Multiplication Word Problems
*Mid-Module Assessment - covers Topics A-D*
Topic E - Division of Tens and Ones with Successive Remainders
Topic F - Reasoning with Divisibility
Topic G - Division of Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, and Ones
Topic H - Multiplication of Two-Digit by Two-Digit Numbers
Focus Standards: 4.OA.1, 4.OA.2, 4.OA.3, 4.OA.4, 4.NBT.5, 4.NBT.6, 4.MD.3
Unit 4, Eureka Module 4 – Angle Measure and Plane Figures
Students are introduced to points, lines, line segments, rays, and angles and the relationships between them. They will construct, recognize, and define these geometric objects before using their new knowledge and understanding to classify figures and solve problems. Students will learn how to create and measure angles, as well as how to create and solve equations to find unknown angle measures.
Topic A – Lines and Angles
Topic B – Angle Measurement
*Mid-Module Assessment - covers Topics A-B*
Topic C – Problem Solving with the Addition of Angle Measures
Topic D – Two-Dimensional Figures and Symmetry
Focus Standards: 4.MD.5, 4.MD.6, 4.MD.7, 4.G.1, 4.G.2, 4.G.3
Unit 5, Eureka Module 5 – Fraction Equivalence, Ordering, and Operations
Students build on their knowledge of unit fractions to explore fraction equivalence and extend their understanding to mixed numbers. They will then move into comparison of fractions and mixed numbers and the representation of both in a variety of models. Benchmark fractions play an important part in students' ability to generalize and reason about relative fraction and mixed number sizes. They'll be able to apply what they know to be true for whole number operations to the new concepts of fraction and mixed number operations.
Topic A – Decomposition and Fraction Equivalence
Topic B – Fraction Equivalence Using Multiplication and Division
Topic C – Fraction Comparison
Topic D – Fraction Addition and Subtraction
*Mid-Module Assessment - covers Topics A-D*
Topic E - Extending Fraction Equivalence to Fractions Greater Than 1
Topic F - Addition and Subtraction of Fractions by Decomposition
Topic G - Repeated Addition of Fractions as Multiplication
Topic H - Exploring a Fraction Pattern
Focus Standards: 4.OA.5, 4.NF.1, 4.NF.2, 4.NF.3, 4.NF.4, 4.MD.4
Unit 6, Eureka Module 6 – Decimal Fractions
Students are given their first opportunity to explore decimal numbers via their relationship to decimal fractions, expressing a given quantity in both fraction and decimal forms. Students will apply their understanding of fractions to decimal numbers, building a solid foundation for work with decimal operations in 5th grade.
Topic A – Exploration of Tenths
Topic B – Tenths and Hundredths
*Mid-Module Assessment – covers Topics A-B*
Topic C – Decimal Comparison
Topic D – Addition with Tenths and Hundredths
Topic E – Money Amounts as Decimal Numbers
Focus Standards: 4.NF.5, 4.NF.6, 4.NF.7, 4.MD.2
Unit 7, Eureka Module 7 – Exploring Measurement with Multiplication
Students build their abilities in measurement as they relate multiplication to the conversion of measurement units.
Topic A – Measurement Conversion Tables
Topic B – Problem Solving with Measurement
Topic C – Investigation of Measurements Expressed as Mixed Numbers
Focus Standards: 4.OA.1, 4.OA.2, 4.OA.3, 4.MD.1, 4.MD.2
