The Mission for Mother Mary’s Children Centre is to contribute towards the reduction of poverty in Malawi through the provision of job opportunities, early childhood education development and feeding programmes for the orphans and vulnerable children. . Providing many programmes in pursuit of this at all three centres.
The Malawian government faces significant challenges in expanding pre-primary education and MMCC wishes to support this gap by assiting children to improve their cognitive, non-cognitive visual reception skills, fine motor skills and receptive or expressive language as well as improving their health through free pre-school education and feeding programmes in the three centres.
MMCC has a home-based care programme for orphans, children who have lost their mothers during childbirth and people living/affected by HIV/AIDS.
The care and support programme aims to promote the empowerment and active participation of the care givers, orphans, the aged and other vulnerable groups in reducing the spread of HIV infection and mitigating the impact of AIDS. The programme targets the chronically ill patients, the aged, orphans and vulnerable children while working with the community volunteers who assist in the care, rehabilitating and teaching of the vocational skills, art and craft activities, medical and palliative care to promote quality care holistically.
Due to the Malawian economy and school fees many Malawians reach adulthood without learning to read or write, limiting their ability to support themselves and their family. MMCC supports adults to achieve their goal of learning how to read and write through afternoon classes at the three centres.
This provides critically needed basic skills for Malawians, particularly the older generation.
School fees for primary school education in Malawi were abolished in 2004 but further education from secondary school to university is fee-paying and this is where children from poorer families and orphans encounter major difficulties. MMCC has been supporting some of these children since 2004 by paying for secondary, college or university fees but a high demand and the current economic situation mean that this is a continual struggle to raise funds to support the cost of care and education.
A few of our supported children are in Malawian universities while others have graduated and are now working in Malawi.
Malawi, as one of the poorest countries in Africa, relies mainly on subsistence farming as its main source of income with the result that access to education is limited especially for young girls. In rural areas women continue to have many children with frequently detrimental impacts on status, income and care.
To support these women, MMCC has small enterprise groups for women weaving where they produce hand bags, trousers, blouses, t-shirts and dresses. The money created from selling these products then goes to assist the women in their homes and support their children/dependents.
MMCC has a fruit tree planting programme in the Shire Valley district of Chikhwawa.
Our vision is to plant more trees and advocate for agroforestry in order to curb deforestation and mitigate damages done by flooding.
MMCC also plans to start a climate change programme through the Adult Literacy classes and at a community level via the operational centres.
