Week of May 11-15

Objectives:

I can...answer the question - Will an ice cube melt faster in saltwater or freshwater? and use the terms density and convection currents in my response.

Monday, May 11: Watch lab set-up video https://ensemble.cesa10.k12.wi.us/hapi/v1/contents/permalinks/Mx8b6LGz/view and set up your materials for our labs this week.

Tuesday, May 12: 1st Experiment: Melting an ice cube in fresh and salt water. Load the video https://blossoms.mit.edu/videos/lessons/will_ice_cube_melt_faster_freshwater_or_saltwater and watch until about 4 minutes (do not watch Activity 2 - that's for after your experiment). Pause at 4 minutes and complete the first experiment. After you've completed your lab and observed what happened, watch Activity 2 and Activity 3 on the video. Stop at 6:50 minutes (Activity 4 -- this will be tomorrow's lab).

Wednesday, May 13: 2nd Experiment: Melting a colored ice cube in fresh and salt water. This experiment will help you visualize what happened in yesterday's experiment. Load up the same video from yesterday and set it for 6:50 (Activity 4). Do the same experiment as yesterday using the colored ice cubes. Once your lab is done, watch Activity 4. Notice that when he says circulation, he is referring to convection currents in the water. And think about how these experiments can relate to ocean currents (water circulating around the world in our oceans).

Thursday, May 14: Finish the video starting at 8:30 (Activity 5) to see how this experiment relates to what happens in our oceans (currents) and climate change. I will add a Google Slides on Thursday for you to look over which reviews the answer to the question, "Will an ice cube melt faster in saltwater or freshwater?"

Tuesday, May 5: Complete the Vocabulary Word/Definition page - turn in

Wednesday, May 6: Read page 201 in your textbook. Complete the Water Cycle page - turn in

Thursday, May 7: Try the Water Cycle lab - read over the Water Cycle Lab Instructions and try it out. Use any size plastic bottle. A 2L one is best, but I would be curious to see if a smaller one would work just as well. BE CAREFUL with the hot water!!

I can...find a real rock and identify it as igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic by examining its characteristics. I will introduce my rock in a Flipgrid video

This is an optional week for science. You can have the week off from science and focus on getting caught up with late science work or other classes . . . OR
You can finish our rock unit by going out into the wild and capturing a rock to take home, clean up, and raise as a new pet.
Then, once you have your pet rock, introduce it to the class on a Flipgrid video (the link is on our Google Classroom page). This will not be graded.
Happy hunting! Now remember, you don't have to do this. You have worked so hard with science that if you want the week to focus on other classes, this is your reward.
For those of you who have not completed your science work so far, do not find a pet rock. Instead, finish your missing work and turn it in by Friday.
WE WILL BEGIN A NEW UNIT ON MONDAY, so enjoy this week off.

Objectives:

I can...
Conceptualize the recurring series of changes undergone by rocks.
Rocks are constantly — but very slowly — changing from one type to another all the time. The changes happen over and over again in a repeating cycle. Students will use an interactive diagram to learn about the rock cycle and what it can tell us about the rocks in our earth.

Monday, April 20, - Thursday, April 23

Activities: Please use our Google Classroom

This week you will finish The Rock Cycle Interactive https://www.learner.org/series/interactive-rock-cycle/ - The Rock Cycle section and complete the last slide on your Google Slides from last week: The Rock Cycle slide. Once your Google Slides is fully finished, submit it and I will send you the answers. Please look over the answers because there is a test on this topic and I want you to have the correct information
Finally -- and this is important -- review all the information from last week and the rock cycle for this week. You are going to take a test. It is the last part of the interactive called TEST YOUR SKILLS section. The great part about this test is that if you are not happy with your score, you can take it again until you are.

Once you are happy with your test score, you are going to take a screen shot of it and send it to me, so I can record it. You will send the screenshot to my email (vmohr@elkmound.k12.wi.us). How do you take a screenshot, you ask? Here's how:

1. Click on the Screenshot Image so you know which 2 keys to use when you take a screenshot (a picture of your screen).

2. Once your test is done and the score is shown on your Chromebook screen, take a screenshot of that image.

3. In the bottom right corner, a box will pop up after you take a screenshot. Click on the Show in Folder message.

4. Once your Screenshot file is up, click and drag it to your Drive.

5. Go to my email, click on the paperclip symbol, attach the screenshot, which is now in your Google Drive, and send it to me.

Try to get all this done by Thursday, so then you have Friday off from science.

TEST YOUR SKILLS section of the Rock Interactive

Week of April 14-17

Objectives:

With these expectations in mind, goals of the Rock Cycle interactive https://www.learner.org/series/interactive-rock-cycle/ are:

Identify the three major classes of rocks.
By looking at photos of real rocks, students will identify the typical characteristics of the three main types of rocks: sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous. Students will also view animations to learn about the way each of these rock types is formed.
Understand the processes that cause rocks to change.
There are five major processes that can turn a rock from one type into another. Using animations and interactive drag-and-drop features, students will learn about these processes and the effects they have on rocks.

Take at least 10 minutes to browse through your science textbook to add background knowledge of the 3 types of rocks (Lesson 3: Rocks, pages 302-308) and the Rock Cycle (Lesson 4: Cycling of Rocks, pages 310-314).

- Transform the Rock (complete the challenge)
