Hello, my name is Kerri Mullis, and I have been dedicated to the field of school counseling for 11 years. This is my 8th year at Elkin High School, and I am proud to call myself a lifelong Bukin' Elk. My passion for this career stems from my own high school experience, where I didn’t receive the guidance I needed in applying to college or exploring my future options. This journey fueled my commitment to helping EHS students discover their strengths, explore their interests, select courses wisely, and set solid post-secondary goals.

I began my higher education journey at Western Carolina University before transferring to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where I graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. While working at an elementary school, I pursued and earned my Master of Arts in Education in School Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in 2015, graduating Summa Cum Laude. I am an active member of the North Carolina School Counselor Association (NCSCA) and the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). In 2021, I achieved my National Board Certification in School Counseling.

I reside in Yadkinville with my husband and our four boys, who fill my life with love, laughter, and a lot of activity, from dirt bikes to sports. Being a mom to boys is a joy, and they keep my days lively and fulfilling.

My primary motivation to become a school counselor is to help remove barriers that are keeping our students from being successful in the classroom. I've been a K-6 teacher for the past 16 years and I learned really quickly that students couldn't sit down and focus on their classwork when their minds were consumed with what may or may not happen before they came to school that day.  Many students face challenges beyond their control and need support to overcome those challenges.  As a school counselor, I plan to help teachers with these students, making sure their basic needs are met, they feel safe here at school, and know they are loved so that their minds are still and they are ready to listen and learn.
I have completed my master's in school counseling, at the University of West Alabama online.  I live in Elkin with my husband and our three children, all who attend Elkin CIty Schools.  I look forward to helping our students in this new capacity as their school counselor.  It's great to be a Bucking Elk!
