In agricultural education we adhere to the three circle model. By incorporating Classroom Instruction, Supervised Agricultural Experiences, and FFA Leadership evenly; our students will have the greatest potential for overall growth and success. At Elkhorn Area High School, all students that take an agriculture course during the school year are automatically enrolled into the FFA Organization through our affiliated membership program. Each student is also required to keep records on a resume-enhancing project of their choice for a final Supervised Agricultural Experience portfolio.
Agricultural education is simply teaching people about the agricultural industry and all of its segments. Some of these segments include: horticulture, biotechnology, natural resources, food sciences, livestock management, and many more. At Elkhorn Area Middle and High Schools, we are dedicated to giving our students as many opportunities to experience each of these segments as possible through our array of class choices.
The World Population is predicted to be 10 billion people by the year 2050. Agriculture is the industry given the task to provide the food, fiber, and fuel to support the demands of a human population in an environmentally sustainable way. Agriculture is an industry capable of supporting a long term demand for trained labor. Agricultural literacy is also critical to keep consumers well informed about the role of agriculture in producing a safe and affordable food supply.
By educating students in middle and high school about the opportunities within the Agricultural industry and its many branches, as well as providing the tools needed to achieve employment post-graduation, we will be able to pull off this hefty task. Less than 1% of the worlds population is directly involved in production agriculture , AKA farming, however the agriculture industry provides 10.9% of U.S. employment.
