Frequently Asked Questions...Â
Do I need to live in one of the districts?
Yes, you need to live within district boundaries to volunteer.
Is there a background check?
Yes. All candidates will be submitted for a background check.
Are there certain physical requirements?
All candidates will participate in a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standard physical/medical exam to ensure they are of adequate health and able to perform duties.
What kind of training or background do I need?
While we are happy to work with those who have prior experience, it is not required. Your interest, availability, and dedication are a good start!
Do I need to do both fire and medical?
We have an option to be EMS / medical only, but not a fire-only option. This is because over half of our calls are medical related, and we need all our firefighters to have some capabilities in this area.
What are the time requirements or commitments?
We will address this further in orientation. There is an up-front time commitment for initial training, and a longer-term commitment once you become a firefighter and/or medical provider. Please attend an orientation to learn more.
Is this dangerous?
Firefighting is an inherently dangerous activity. Because of this fact, ECFPD and CFPD prioritize the safety of their members. Safety is infused into our culture through scheduled in-house classroom and hands-on training activities, expert guest instructors, employee policies, standard operating procedures, and by always watching out for each other.
We train our new members to learn how to properly handle emergencies. Existing members must continue to learn, train, and improve throughout the year and must maintain current certifications on various aspects of firefighting. We ensure that members are familiar with our trucks and equipment prior to use, and all members help to maintain our equipment and trucks so that they are in good working condition. We work as a team together. As you become more experienced with our safety procedures and equipment you will be more involved during fire and rescue calls.
