Hub Director Delivers Keynote at EMD Symposium
The Electrical Machines and Drives (EMD) Research Group and IEEE University of Sheffield Student Branch held the EMD Symposium 2022 in Mappin Hall, the University of Sheffield on 15 September 2022.
Over 50 academic staff, PGR students and PDRAs attended this academic event. The Counsellor of IEEE Student Branch, Dr. Xiao Chen, opened the symposium and led a moment of silence from all the attendees to pay their respect to Queen Elizabeth II.
The first keynote of the event was delivered by Professor Zi-Qiang Zhu on electrical machines in electric vehicles; Various types of torque production mechanisms were reviewed before a demonstration of how to generate ideas for new machine topologies. Hub Director Professor Geraint Jewell then made a keynote speech on a review of advances and challenges in electrical machine manufacture. He described the background of a limited breakthrough in materials for the active parts of electrical machines in recent decades, the presentation reviewed the potential for increasing machine power density by improved thermal performance and light-weighting of structural elements.
Yinka Leo Ogundiran, Chair of IEEE University of Sheffield Student Branch (seen below with Hub Director), shared with delegates the wide range of events and activities held by this IEEE student branch, including academic seminars, industrial visits and network events. This IEEE student branch received the award of the IEEE High Performance Student Branch Award in 2022.
