More Ed Award FAQs
Because the education award counts as taxable income when you spend it, if you spend it all at once, it could affect your taxes. For example, if you have a full time education award and you use it all at once to pay off a loan, that could impact your tax bracket or how much you owe in taxes.
You will receive a 1099 MISC form from the IRS for any income of $600 or more. That is why people reference $600. If you use less than that, you won’t receive a form from the IRS, however, it is still supposed to be included on your taxes.
Although it counts as taxable income it is not supposed to count as income for the consideration of federal financial aid on the FAFSA. You will want to put the education award AND your living allowance amount on the FAFSA in the line marked, “tax exempt interest income”.
It is also not supposed to count as income when being considered for other federal programs such as SNAP (i.e. food stamps). Many AmeriCorps programs will provide a letter for their AmeriCorps members that explains the AmeriCorps living allowance to other agencies when you are applying.
