AmeriCorps Eldon schedules vary based on member and building needs. The base schedule is as follows for each building:
South Elementary, 7:15AM-4:15PM
Upper Elementary, 7:15AM-4:15PM
Middle School, 7:45AM-4:45PM
High School, 8:00AM-5:00PM
Hours can be adjusted to fit full-time college coursework schedules AND/OR member preferences and building needs (ex. morning LEAP help, 6:45 start time and 3:45 departure).
Our first day of orientation is August 8, 2023. We will have orientation from August 8-August 17. The students' first day will be August 21.
***An individual can only begin serving once their AmeriCorps Application
and background checks are complete. ***
At School - Our members serve every day school is in session including summer school. In addition, they serve professional development days throughout the year, orientation, and and parent teacher conferences.
Outside of School - Because AmeriCorps is a national service organization, service is at the heart of all we do. Throughout the year, there are a handful of extra events we assist with or host to instill hearts for service in our school and community. These events include but may not be limited to 9/11 Day of Service (September), Turkey Dinner (October), MLK Day of Service (January), and Reading in the Park/Good Deeds Day (April). Aside from these special events, no nights or weekends are required.
Holidays - Generally speaking, our service schedule follows the school calendar. Aside from orientation and professional development dates, we aren't at school if the students aren't. You'll enjoy time off for winter break, and all school observed holidays.
All AmeriCorps Eldon Members are required to serve 1700 hours over the course of their year of service. In comparison, a full-time job would be 2080 hours. Although the 1700 hours are feasible, service requires a significant commitment. We ask that candidates seriously consider the commitment prior to signing to serve. Because we function under a grant, there is a certain point in the calendar year when we are no longer able to refill a position. If someone signs up to serve and later decides to resign, we could very possibly have students without the support they and their teachers had planned on. Please be certain you're prepared to fulfill your contract before you commit to a year of service.
Summer school will take place through the month of June. All members are required to service a half day through summer school. Following summer school, we will have an end of service celebration where we will serve the final required hour of service. We rarely have anyone serve in July aside from the final required hour, but the month is available should anyone need additional time to earn their hours.
Our goal is for everyone to be completed with their required 1700 hours by the end of summer school, so they have the full month of July to rest, pick up another job, or focus on their own coursework and/or family.
Schedules can be adjusted to allow members to have regular absence to travel to and attend classes. In some cases our members have been able to zoom into their classes from their service site (school at which they serve). Our Program Supervisor works with our members to ensure full-time service and full-time college coursework are feasible under the members' college schedule. Hours plans are developed creating a consistent weekly schedule and ensuring the schedule is possible to maintain in conjunction with full-time service. All AmeriCorps Eldon Members are required to serve 1700 hours between the start of their service and the close of the contract (July 31).
Our students benefit from members being engaged in post-secondary coursework. Our members gain solid professional development from the content they are exposed to in their college classes especially when completing educator certification. Not only that, but when our members build meaningful relationships with their students, our students care about what our members care about. When our members are regularly absent from service in order to attend a class, our students see those members valuing their education which encourages our students to do the same.
Members are assigned to one building where they serve in one or two grade levels at the elementary level or one or two content areas at the high school. In these settings, members work with students one-on-one or in small groups - sometimes in the whole class setting, sometimes in a separate location.
At the elementary, members help students work on things like letter recognition, phonemic awareness, and comprehension for literacy support, and/or comparable foundational math skills.
At the secondary level, members push-in to content area classrooms to support students who struggle with math and/or literacy so they're better able to understand and engage in lessons in those content areas (science, social studies, mathematics, and/or language arts).
Whenever possible, we craft members' schedules to include their specific skills and interests to provide authentic connections with kids over the content/activities THEY'RE interested in. For example, we've had members support extracurriculars (track, basketball, drama club, choir, etc.) after school or outside of intervention time while supporting math, language arts, or social studies during school. Students connected with members over their shared skills/interests in the "outside of the classroom environment" and then were more willing to work with members when it came time to focus on content they struggled at and/or didn't like.
Members receive their monthly living allowance via direct deposit on the 10th of each month (unless the 10th falls on a weekend, then it is issued the Friday before). The 2023 living allowance will be $17,600 for the year or $1,466.66/month (this is a pre-taxed total, take home will vary depending on your tax situation).
The first living allowance will be issued on September 8th, 2022 for the service provided in August. The final living allowance will be issued on August 10th, 2024 for July's service. The living allowance does not change from one month to the next no matter how much or how little time is served throughout the month. So long as members have earned time within the month, they will continue to earn their living allowance and benefits.
*That means our members will plan to be paid $1,466.66 for one hour of service in July!*
In addition to consistent monthly income, our members have access to
paid healthcare
flexible scheduling

We are frequently asked what we are looking for in our candidates, and our answer is always the same. We are looking for 30 different people from 30 different walks of life. Our students are not one-size-fits-all beings. They're each one-of-a-kind. They have unique skills, interests, and lived experiences. In order to increase our chances of providing EVERY student with the "just right" person to help them succeed personally and academically, we need to build a staff that is just as diverse as our students. We can't wait to meet you and learn more about what makes you, YOU!
