The naturalised river we see flowing through the Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park presents a sight of grace & continuity. However, a decade ago, the 'river' was in a very different state than what we find it to be now. This brings about the larger question of our location and situational changes which have been happening across the years in the vicinity.
The location of Eunoia Junior College in Bishan. How would one represent our location to be?
Could it be represented by a Google Pin, as shown below?
Do the numbers, '1.3521° N, 103.8198° E' make sense?
Or does it suffice to mention that we are located in the Sin Ming Estate?
Maybe looking at either direction could be informative as well. Towards the West, we see Lower Pierce Reservoir and the Central Catchment Nature Reserve (CCNR). Travelling eastwards down the river, eventually leads us to the Marina Bay Area.
Locations can be either described to be as 'absolute' or 'relative', depending on the perspective & use for the user.
The Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park has been through massive development in recent years. What was then- a concrete canal has now been transformed into a meandering, naturalised river. The Kallang river, as it is known, serves to connect different waterways across the island and also serve other communal purposes such as education and social activities.
EJC is, in fact, located on the floodplains of the river. The granite-rock filled Gabion baskets which line the northern walls of the campus are part of flood mitigation measures. Has the river overflown across its banks before? Well check out what happened in 2017 below:
