Read Aloud-The students are identifying what happens to the main character throughout the book. In the middle of May the students will start to learn what the main idea or topic is of a fiction and nonfiction book.
Phonics- We are finishing learning about ending spelling patterns and then we will start to learn about r controlled vowels.
Writing- The students have finished up their inquiry project on penguins. Now we are working on our persuasive/opinion writing unit. We will continue to go back and edit our work (checking for periods, capitals, add in missing words, take out words or ideas that we don't need and correctly spell the word wall words) so our writing is nice, neat and easy to read.
***If you notice that your student is still reversing their b’s and d’s don’t panic! This is a very common error in grades 1 and 2. Just gently remind them what a b and d look like and have them fix it.
Reading Workshop- The students are working on becoming word detectives. Here are some of the strategies that we have learned about so far. Feel free to ask you child what these strategies mean or what one they are working on.

Self correct reading (slowing down pace and rereading).
Firgure out unknown words using various strategies (stretch the word, chunk the word and manipulate letter sounds).
In math, we have started our Geometry Unit. We will study 2-D and 3-D shapes by sorting, composing, decomposing, identifying shapes in composite shapes and looking at symmetry by folding and matching. Weekly practice at home will greatly benefit your child’s ability to add and subtract the basic facts to the sum of 18. In May we will be starting our fast fact quizzes.
We will be finishing up out Earth systems and then we will be starting our last Science unit on Living systems. Here we will learn about what makes plants and animals the same and different, how the local environment meets the basic needs of plants and animals, why animals move from place to place, how we take care of plants and animals and how humans depend on plants and animals to meet their basic needs.
Class 12 is starting their unit on Culture. Here we will look at what culture is (language, food, clothes, celebrations, traditions and beliefs) and what it looks like for the Francophone, First Nations, Métis and Inuit. Then at the end of the unit we will study what our own culture looks like.
