Phonics- We are finishing up learning about r controlled vowels.
Writing- The students are working on our opinion writing unit. We will continue to go back and edit our work (checking for periods, capitals, add in missing words, take out words or ideas that we don't need and correctly spell the word wall words) so our writing is nice, neat and easy to read. Near the end of the month we will be working on a memoir book of our time in grade 1.
***If you notice that your student is still reversing their b’s and d’s don’t panic! This is a very common error in grades 1 and 2. Just gently remind them what a b and d look like and have them fix it.
Reading Workshop- We are working on our unit about readers having big jobs to do. This unit will review and add to the fluency, phonics and comprehension strategies we have already learned. Here are some of the strategies that we have learned about so far. Feel free to ask you child what these strategies mean or what one they are working on.
Stop at the first sign of trouble
Try something (try a strategy you have learned)
Try something else to get the job done (if the strategy picked doesn't work, pick a different strategy).
Do a triple check (does it look right?, does it sound right?, does it make sense?).
We are finishing up our unit on Geometry. Next we will do a quick unit on data analysis where we will learn how to gather data, how to make a concrete graph and how to make a pictograph from a concrete graph. Then we will be going back and reviewing the key concepts from the math curriculum. Keep up the excellent practice of the basic math facts!
In Science we are continuing to learn about what makes plants and animals the same and different, how the local environment meets the basic needs of plants and animals, why animals move from place to place, how we take care of plants and animals and how humans depend on plants and animals to meet their basic needs.

Next we will be learning about the different traditions that we have carried on from the past to the present. The last couple of weeks of June we will be spend looking at what connections we have with the Indigenous people.
