In April, 2024 we met up for the first meeting of the project, which was hosted by our Hungarian partner. The topic for the meeting was "stories about mythological creatures", so everybody prepared by doing research about mythological creatures in their countries. Students brainstormed and made mindmaps about what mythological creatures they knew, and learned about common characters they didn't know before.
When the Irish, Turkish and Finnish participants first arrived in Budapest, they met up with their Hungarian hosts in Budapest to find out about the stories of the city. During a walk along the beautiful river, the hosting teachers also worked as our guides, telling stories about Budapest. After the walk, we moved on to an Escape Room to experience stories and mysteries hands-on before catching the train to Tiszafüred.
In Tiszafüred, there was a wide range of school activities. We were welcomed with traditional dance and majorette shows, and shown around the school by students guides. There were icebreaker activities and collective story writing, as well as sports activities and games. The story-writing activity resulted in a number of stories, which you can find below. One night, there was a fancy dress party where the theme, of course, was mythological characters. Another afternoon, the guests were taken out on a motorboat tour of Lake Tisza to enjoy the views and wildlife around the lake. Before leaving, there was a presentation about the nature and wildlife of Lake Tisza, so everybody knew what to look out for in the greenery!
One day, we went to the Eco-centre in Porozló, the neighbouring village. We learnt about wildlife and nature, and there was also time for outdoor games and activities. On our final day, we went to the medieval town of Eger to visit Eger Castle and the tunnels beneath it. The guides hade plenty of exciting stories to tell about the history of the castle! The day, as well as our project meeting in Hungary, was wrapped up with a few hours blissfully soaking in the thermal water of Egerszalók spa.
For the Hungarian meeting, all the partner schools prepared by making a presentation about mythological creatures from their folklore. Some groups also added a drama about the character.
